GLORY be to God for dappled things ...

All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.
-- from Pied Beauty by Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–89)

Imperfection

Photo by Rich Seeley (Leica D-Lux 4)

Painting by Peggy Radcliffe (16x20 acrylic on stretched canvas)

We cannot avoid missing the point of almost everything we do. But what of it? Life is not a matter of getting something out of everything. Life itself is imperfect. All created beings begin to die as soon as they begin to live, and no one expects any one of them to become absolutely perfect, still less to stay that way. Each individual thing is only a sketch of the specific perfection planned for its kind. Why should we ask it to be anything more? -- Thomas Merton, No Man Is an Island

Spenser's Road

Photo by Rich Seeley

Painting by Peggy L. Radcliffe

that cat wanted to ride
in every car or truck
he ever saw
“ride momma ride”
every door an opening
he wanted to go through
there was more
on the other side
always something new
always a chance to ride
until he broke through
the last portal on earth
and rode down this road
which while you can’t see it
goes all the way home

Where to see God

Since most of us aren't likely to see God in a burning bush, Thomas Merton suggested that young religious look for God in his creation.

Armenian Apostolic Church, Rancho Mirage, CA (under construction)

The Armenian Apostolic Church was founded by Jesus Christ, the church's Website explains. According to tradition, two of His Apostles — St. Thaddeus and St. Bartholomew — preached His Gospel in Armenia as early as the second half of the first century. Then in the early fourth century St. Gregory the Illuminator formally established the Church in Armenia, when King Tiridates III was baptized and declared Christianity as the state religion. Indeed, the Christianization of Armenia “determined the entire future course of Armenian history”
